BEAUMONT, Texas – Tied at halftime, Lamar struck three times in the second to grab a 3-0 decision from the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program on Friday at the LU Soccer Complex.
Â
The goal for Lamar (2-1, 1-1 SLC) in the 55th minute was the first A&M-Corpus Christi (1-3-1, 0-1 SLC) conceded in 279 minutes.
Â
"So proud of the ladies. It was probably the best soccer game I have been apart of in the SLC. Whoever scored first was probably going to win it. After they scored, we went after it as I'd rather lose 3-0 going for the win than sit at 1-0. This time it didn't work but other times it will," said head coach
Craig Shaw.
Â
The Islanders were led offensively by seniors
Celia Hilsabeck and
Kayla Gove who registered four shots apiece. Senior
Abby Deakin fired three shots.
Â
Deakin, junior
Siri O'Donnell and freshman Herrera all played the full 90 minutes for the Islanders, who were playing their first game in 13 days due to one COVID-19 and two weather related postponements.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks against the defending SLC champions.
Â
The goal scorers were Lamar were Esther Okoronkwo in the 55th minute, Christine Kitaru in the 82nd minute and Madison Ledet in the 89th minute.
Â
The Islanders will close out the weekend with another road game Sunday at 1 p.m. at McNeese.
