CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball welcomes Houston for a three-game series as part of the Kleberg Bank College Classic held at crosstown venue Whataburger Field.
The Islanders and Cougars take the field under the lights for a pair of 6 p.m. (CDT) matchups Friday and Saturday to open the set, before wrapping up the weekend with a 1 p.m. Sunday matinee.
All three games can be seen on FloBaseball.tv, an online streaming service with plans beginning at $12.99 per month.
Islander Notes
- A&M-Corpus Christi enters the series with a 3-1 mark after taking all three games from Central Michigan in the opening-weekend home series before dropping an offensive duel with the Cougars on their field in their fourth game in three days.
- Luke Marbach returned to the field with a bang, launching five hits and driving home four runs on a pair of doubles and a long ball to claim Southland Hitter of the Week accolades. He paces the Islander squad in hits (6), doubles (3), and sits in a three-way tie for RBIs (4).
- The Islanders lifted four homers in the final two games of the Central Michigan and later saw Josh Caraway become the first multi-homer member with a bomb to left field against the Cougars. Mike Williams, Tre Jones, and Luke Marbach each have a homer to their name in the young season.
- In their first series of 2021, A&M-Corpus Christi's pitching contingent held the Chippewas to 23 scoreless frames over the three-game set, led by starter Henry Bird's 5.0 innings of hitless and scoreless ball that saw him fan four batters in a 5-1 rout in the mound victory.
- A&M-Corpus Christi head coach Scott Malone is in his 14th season at the helm of the Islanders and boasts a career record of 322-363-2 and 167-198-2 in Southland play.
- The 3-1 record marks the Islanders best start since 2018.
Scouting the Opponent
- Houston owns a spotless 4-0 record after sweeping Texas Southern on opening weekend and adding another tally in a 12-8 slugfest over the Islanders which saw the Cougars lift five home runs, kicking off a four-game set between the clubs and acting as a preview to the Kleberg College Classic.
- The Cougars collected a pair of American Athletic Conference weekly honors, as Steven Rivas slugged a 1.700 and tagged 17 bases to take player of the week while Robert Gasser earned pitcher of the week behind a career-high seven strikeouts and limiting the Texas Southern hitters to 1-of-16 from the plate.
- The 4-0 record marks the best start for the Houston program since 2016.
Series History
- In a series history dating back to 2012, Houston holds the 7-2 advantage entering the weekend series as both clubs clash at Whataburger Field for the first time since Feb. 26, 2017.
