CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball outscored the Privateers 37-23 in a crucial second half to run away with the 66-53 victory and season sweep over New Orleans Wednesday evening at Lakefront Arena.
Alecia Westbrook added another double double to her growing resume, pacing the Islanders offensive and defensive totals with 15 points and 12 rebounds, with nine of her points coming from the charity stripe.
Hayle Campbell and
Makinna Serrata completed the Islanders' scoring trio with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
The Islanders rebounded from a halftime deficit to claim the eventual 36-35 lead off a
Paige Allen jumper midway through the third in what acted as the final lead switch of the contest. Over the third and fourth quarter, the Islanders outscored New Orleans 37-23 and stretched the margin to 13 points – the largest of the game – in the waning seconds. Â
Westbrook and Serrata shined in a strong first-quarter showing as they combined for nine of the Islanders' 15 points to take an early lead and hold the Privateers to the first of two nine-point frames.
New Orleans used a 9-0 run to start the second and poured in 21-points over a 10-minute span to overtake the lead and hold the slim 30-29 edge heading to halftime. But it was all Islanders in the latter half as the visiting club picked up their second league win of the season.
Mary Delgado paced UNO with 20 points while Mia Deck chipped in 12.
Up next, A&M-Corpus Christi embarks to Incarnate Word for Saturday, Feb. 27 matinee slated for a 3 p.m. start.
