Women’s Tennis Hosts UTRGV in South Texas Showdown, Presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The second encounter between the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program and UTRGV will take place Tuesday at 1 p.m. when they square off in the South Texas Showdown at the Henry Tennis Center.
 
The showdown, an all-sports competition between A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV, is presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union. As an institution, the Islanders lead the series 3-1. This year's standings are tied 16.5-16.5.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi (9-1) won the first meeting on the road 6-1, in what was also the last time either of the two teams competed competed. The Islanders and the Vaqueros (0-5) have gone two weeks without a match.
 
In the first meeting, A&M-Corpus Christi won all three doubles matches against UTRGV. The Islanders clinched the match with straight set wins at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles.
 
As a team, A&M-Corpus Christi is 46-5 in singles and 23-3 in doubles. Sophomore Mariya Shumeika is a perfect 9-0 in singles, primarily playing the No. 2 position. She's also 9-1 at No. 1 doubles with fellow sophomore Camille Townsend.
 
The Islanders are 27-3 all-time against UTRGV, including a 16-2 mark at home. A&M-Corpus Christi has won six straight matches in the series.
