CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A walk-off in game one and big six-inning effort during the nightcap highlighted Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's triumphant return with a doubleheader sweep over Central Michigan Sunday at Chapman Field.
Game 1
After seeing a 2-0 lead slip away in the eighth and trailing by a run in the final inning, the Islanders broke out the bats and completed the 4-3 walk-off win behind a
Josh Caraway single that plated the deciding run in a tightly-contested opener.
The Islanders held Central Michigan scoreless through eight thanks to starting pitcher
Leo Perez's solid 5.0 frames that saw him fan four and retire 11 batters as A&M-Corpus Christi built a 2-0 nest as
Luke Marbach crossed the plate in the first and fifth frames.
JT Moeller made his debut for the blue and green in spectacular fashion, registering back-to-back strikeouts to strand a Chippewa bases-loaded situation and only allowing one run in the ninth to keep the Islanders within striking distance and pick up the win.
Game 2
A big sixth-inning that included home runs from Marbach and
Mike Williams powered the Islanders past Central Michigan 5-1 in the season-opening nightcap.
Marbach got the offense rolling early with a leadoff double, but it wouldn't be until his second two-base hit later in the bottom of the third that helped Steven Rivera tap the plate and hand the Islanders a 1-0 edge.
A
Diego Johnson single kickstarted a back-breaking, four-run frame for the home club as Marbach rounded out his three-hit day in dramatic fashion with left-field homer to pad a 3-0 cushion. With
Itchy Burts getting a double shortly thereafter to keep momentum going, Williams launched a rocket to right field to plate two more runs and stretch the Islander advantage to five.
A&M-Corpus Christi's pitching staff once again kept the Chippewas in check as
Henry Bird kept the visitors hitless through five and fanned four to earn the victory.
The Islanders host Central Michigan in the series finale Monday, Feb. 22 with first pitch slated for noon.
