CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – On Big Sunday of the 55th annual H-E-B Tournament of Champions, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis program defeated UTRGV 4-1 before dropping the night cap 4-1 to New Mexico State at the Henry Tennis Center.
The Islanders moved to 11-2 overall on the season.
Freshman
Pascal Lorieul went 3-0 on the day. He won two doubles matches at the No. 2 position with freshman
Carlos Berna Ruiz and a singles match against UTRGV. His singles match against NMSU went unfinished, despite him being one game from victory.
In the first match, A&M-Corpus Christi earned the doubles point over the Vaqueros. The win at No. 2 doubles was bundled with a victory from senior
Chad Nguyen and freshman
Nathan Schwartz 6-2 at No. 3.
In singles, Lorieul won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 and junior
Kyohei Yamanaka won after his opponent retired. The clincher came at No. 5 where Berna Ruiz finished off Zane Kohrs 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Against NMSU, the Aggies grabbed the doubles point despite a 6-2 win from Lorieul and Berna Ruiz.
The lone point for the Islanders came at No. 6 singles where freshman
Borja Delgado ousted Petr Stavrovskij in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
The overall match was closer than the final score indicated as both Lorieul and Schwartz were one game away from straight set wins before play was halted.
The men will have over a week off before they compete again at UTSA on Wednesday, March 3 at 2 p.m.
