A&M-Corpus Christi Battles UTRGV to a 0-0 Tie in South Texas Showdown

EDINBURG, Texas – A hard-fought defensive battle ended in a 0-0 tie after two overtimes for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program at UTRGV on Wednesday night at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

The game was part of the South Texas Showdown, an all-sports competition between A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union. As an institution, the Islanders lead the series 3-1. This year's standings are tied 17.5-17.5.

"It was definitely an improvement in certain areas from the last game. We fought and worked very hard and that is something I'm excited to have seen as I can work with that," said head coach Craig Shaw.

Freshman Kennedy Stelling registered a shutout in net. After 110 minutes, she tallied seven saves.

The Islanders (0-2-1) recorded four shots in the game, including a pair on goal from senor Abby Deakin and sophomore Maddie Janolo.

Sophomore defender Alana Mangan logged 110 minutes on the backline. She's played in every minute so far this year.

UTRGV (2-0-1) saw Mari Liis Lillemae take five shots. Maile Lunardi notched a shutout in net.

It was the only game of the week for the Islanders since their game Friday at Abilene Christian was postponed to March 5. A&M-Corpus Christi will next take the pitch on Friday, Feb. 19 when it hosts Northwestern State in its conference opener at 7 p.m.
