Islanders Return to the Court to Host St. Edward’s in Dugan Wellness Center Sunday

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In its first game in eight days, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball program will host St. Edward's in a 2 p.m. game Sunday in the Dugan Wellness Center.
 
The Islanders (3-3) are a perfect 3-0 at home this season with wins over UTRGV, St. Thomas (TX) and Pacific. A&M-Corpus Christi is 204-144 all-time at home and 50-28 in the Dugan Wellness Center.
 
In A&M-Corpus Christi's last home game, it topped Pacific 81-61. Senior Makinna Serrata poured in a career-high 28 points and nine rebounds. It was her second 20-plus scoring night of the year which included 20 points and six rebounds against UTRGV.
 
Serrata is the team's leading scorer with 13.7 points per outing. She also pulls down 6.2 rebounds per game.
 
Junior Alecia Westbrook is the reigning SLC Player of the Week winner. She averaged 15.7 points, 10.3 rebounds and 3.3 steals in games against Pacific, Denver and Tulane, and earned a spot on the Denver All-Tournament Team. On the season, Westbrook averages a double-double of 11.3 points and 11.2 rebounds per game, and leads the conference in rebounding. Westbrook was named to the SLC Preseason All-Conference Second-Team and led the league in rebounding last season with 8.8 per game.
 
Freshman Annukka Willstedt puts in 12.5 points per game and is coming off her best showing of 25 points against Tulane where she was 7-for-8 3FG. Willstedt is shooting .545 (12-22) from long range on the year and has tallied four consecutive double-figure scoring games.
 
The game will count as an exhibition for St. Edward's. It will be the team's second Division I exhibition after falling to Rice 84-41 on Nov. 9. The Hilltoppers compete in the Lonestar Conference at the Division II level.

NOTES
- A&M-Corpus Christi will look to defeat St. Edward's for the second straight season. Last year, the Islanders won 78-70 as Westbrook turned in a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds.
 
- As a team, A&M-Corpus Christi leads the Southland Conference in both assist:turnover ratio (0.92) and steals (11.67 spg). Individually, sophomore Violeta Verano ranks first in assists (4.7 apg) and sophomore Nabaweeyah McGill is tied for first in blocks (1.5 bpg).
 
- There are only four current student-athletes in the entire Southland Conference that have won an SLC championship, and all four are on A&M-Corpus Christi: Westbrook, Serrata, Hayle Campbell and Olivia Dowden.
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi is only in its 23rd season of basketball. The Islanders were the 2020 SLC champions, finishing the year 23-7 overall and 17-3 SLC. The conference tournament was canceled due to COVID-19, but the Islanders were the top seed. The 17-3 SLC record was the best-ever in program history.
