Men’s Basketball Brings Hot Streak Home to American Bank Center Saturday

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas –
Riding a five-game winning streak, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball program will host Southwestern University at 2 p.m. Saturday in the American Bank Center.
 
With a 6-1 record, A&M-Corpus Christi has already surpassed its win total from last season when it ended 5-19. The Islanders have the best record in the Southland Conference.
 
Most recently, A&M-Corpus Christi topped UTRGV in the South Texas Showdown 83-77 after junior Isaac Mushila tallied his third consecutive double-double with 28 points and 11 rebounds. The winning streak also includes victories over IUPUI, Denver, UTSA and St. Mary's (TX).
 
Mushila nearly averages a double-double with 15.9 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. He ranks first in the Southland Conference in both rebounding and field goal percentage (.685). Mushila won SLC Player of the Week on Nov. 22, becoming the first Islander to do so since Feb. 20, 2017. He was named to the UTSA All-Tournament Team along with senior De'Lazarus Keys.
 
Mushila is one of two Islanders averaging in double-figures along with senior Myles Smith who puts in 10.4 points per outing. Smith is coming off a 16-point performance in the win over the Vaqueros, which matched his season-high.
 
Junior Terrion Murdix ranks first in the conference in assists (4.7 apg) and steals (2.1 spg). Murdix has grabbed at least one steal in every game this year. He's coming off a career-high 14 points against UTRGV and was 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
 
Southwestern will play its first Division I opponent this season. The Pirates are an NCAA Division III member and compete in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC).

NOTES
- The Islanders are off to their best start since 2016-17. The program has not started 7-1 since 2004-05 and has never been 8-1.
 
- Saturday will be the first-ever meeting between A&M-Corpus Christi and Southwestern.
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi has outscored the opposition in fast break points in all seven games this year. The team is 6-0 when it outscores the opposition off the bench.
 
- As a team, the Islanders rank first in the SLC in field goal percentage (.477) and are second in scoring (78.4 ppg), rebounding margin (+6.6) and assists (17.0 apg).
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi has used a balanced scoring attack thus far. It has seven student-athletes who score at least 7.2 points per game.
