CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Coming off a big rivalry win over UTRGV, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball program will look to turn it into a winning-streak Wednesday when it hosts St. Thomas (TX) at 7 p.m. in the Dugan Wellness Center.
The Islanders (1-1) scored the first 13 points of the game against the Vaqueros and never looked back to grab a 66-57 victory in the South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union. Senior
Makinna Serrata netted a career-high 20 points, while sophomore
Nabaweeyah McGill matched her career-high with 11 points.
Through two games, the Islanders rank second in the Southland Conference in offensive rebounding with 14.0 per game. Junior
Alecia Westbrook is the team's leading rebounder with 10.5 per outing (second in the SLC).
Westbrook, who has started in 20 consecutive games dating back to last season, leads the league in minutes played with 32.5 per game. She's a Preseason All-Conference Second-Team selection.
The Islanders opened the season against a nationally ranked opponent in No. 23 Texas A&M, which made it to the Sweet 16 last year. The Islanders led after the first four and a half minutes and trailed by just two with 1:33 left in the first. Serrata tallied 11 points and eight rebounds, while junior
Alexandria Pollard notched a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Serrata is averaging a team-high 15.5 points per game to go along with 7.0 rebounds per outing.
St. Thomas (1-1) fell to Dallas Christian 74-66 in its season opener before bouncing back to beat Arlington Baptist 75-61. Most recently, it dropped an exhibition game to HBU 70-48 but Adriana Chavez was 4-for-9 from long-range with a game-high 18 points.
The Celts only played eight games last year due to COVID-19 and went 4-4, but were 20-5 overall and 15-3 in conference the season prior. The Celts compete in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) at the Division III level.
Wednesday's game can be watched live for free on the Islanders Digital Network with Doug Kesterson on the call.
