Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Smith Surpasses 1,000 Career Points in Defeat at Texas A&M

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – It was a historic day for senior Myles Smith as he became the newest member of the 1,000-point scoring club for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball program in an 86-65 defeat to Texas A&M on Sunday at Reed Arena.

Smith entered the game needing 12 points. He finished with a game-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting and 4-of-6 from three-point range.

The Islanders (1-1), who outrebounded Texas A&M (3-0) 37-35, hung around for most of the game. They led by nine after seven minutes and were only down four at half. A&M-Corpus Christi went back up 46-45 at the 14:43 mark of the second before the Aggies went on a couple runs and pulled away down the stretch.

Freshman Jalen Jackson scored in double-figures with 13 points. Junior Isaac Mushila ended with eight points and six rebounds, and senior San Antonio Brinson made an impact on the glass with a game-high nine rebounds.

The Aggies finished with five double-figure scorers including Quenton Jackson and Wade Taylor IV off the bench with 15 and 14, respectively.

A&M-Corpus Christi led 8-3 early after an old-fashion three-point play by Jackson and a modern long-range shot by Smith at the 17:34 mark. A jumper in the paint by junior Trevian Tennyson increased it to 15-7 with 14:41 left.

The team's largest lead of the game 19-10 came after a second-chance bucket by Mushila with 12:26 to go. Though, the Aggies answered with an 8-0 run to cut it to 19-18 with 9:21 remaining.

The Islanders were up 28-27 at the 3:05 mark when Texas A&M closed the half on an 11-6 run to go up 38-34 at the break.

A&M-Corpus Christi came back strong early in the second and regained the lead 46-45 on a three by Tennyson with 14:43 mark. However, that was its final lead of the game as the Aggies used a 7-0 spurt to get back ahead 52-46 and never looked back.

Texas A&M went on an 8-0 run to extend its advantage to 71-56 with 4:19 to go and then scored the final nine points of the contest.

The Islanders will remain on the road Tuesday when they play a neutral court match in San Antonio, Texas against IUPUI. The game will be hosted by UTSA at 5 p.m.

NOTES
- Smith's 1,000th point came on a jumper outside the paint at the 3:46 mark of the second half. He went on to hit a three-pointer a minute later.
