HOUSTON – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer program fired its fair share of shots but just couldn't find the back of the net in a 2-0 defeat to HBU on Thursday at Sorrels Field.
Â
The Islanders (4-7-2, 2-3-2 SLC) registered shots from nine different student-athletes for a total of 13 in the match against the Huskies (3-7-3, 3-2-2 SLC), but the finishing touch did not come.
Â
"We played well and had enough chances to win the game, but we have to stop being the better team and coming away with the loss," said head coach
Craig Shaw. "Finishing chances are key."
Â
HBU got on the board in the 37th minute on a goal from the center of the box by Felecia Hernandez. A&M-Corpus Christi pressed hard in the second half, but with nearly everyone pushed up the Huskies were able to add a late tally by Xya Balderas in the 88th minute.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi's shots came from senior
Reaghan Lang, junior
Samantha Palomino, junior
Emma Gibbs, sophomore
Natalie Gonzalez, sophomore
Reese Cross, sophomore
Maddie Janolo, freshman
Emma Crump, freshman
Megan Guy and freshman
Morgan Westbury.
Â
Gibbs and Crump both played 90 minutes. Janolo made her first start of the season on defense and notched a pair of shots in 60 minutes. Freshman
Emily Levy made her third start of the season in net and made seven saves.
Â
It was the second meeting this year between the Islanders and the Huskies. The first ended in a 1-1 tie in Corpus Christi in the SLC opener on Sept. 10.
Â
The Islanders, who played their second of a six-game road swing, will have over a week off before their next competition at Northwestern State. They'll head to Natchitoches, Louisiana for a 7 p.m. contest on Friday, Oct. 15.
