NATCHITOCHES, La. – Tied 0-0 at half time, Northwestern State was able to muster a pair of second half goals to get past the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer program 2-0 Friday at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.
Â
The Lady Demons (10-3-2, 7-1-1 SLC), who are alone in first-place, broke the stalemate in the 46th minute on a score by Olivia Draguicevich. They added another tally in the 67th minute for insurance.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi (4-8-2, 2-4-2 SLC) fired 12 shots and held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks, but just couldn't find the finishing touch.
Â
"It hurts to say it again that we were the better team. Two mistakes and missed opportunities cost us the game. We are young and it's about the process this year. It will pay off," said head coach
Craig Shaw.
Â
The Islanders spread it around as 10 different student-athletes fired at least one shot. Freshmen
Emma Crump and
Gracie Gill registered two apiece.
Â
Crump and sophomore
Emma Herrera played all 90 minutes to anchor the back line. Freshman
Emily Levy made the start in net and recorded five saves.
Â
Sophomore
Molly Arens returned after missing the previous 11 games due to injury. She started at midfield and notched a shot in 54 minutes.
Â
It was the third of a lengthy six-game road swing for the Islanders. They'll wrap-up the weekend on the road Sunday against McNeese at 1 p.m. at Cowgirl Field.
