Soccer Completes Season Sweep over Nicholls

THIBODAUX, La. – Goals by sophomore Maggie Murray and junior Samantha Palomino fueled a 2-1 victory for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer program over Nicholls on Friday at the Nicholls Soccer Complex.

The Islanders improved to 6-9-1 overall and 4-5-1 in conference. The league office announced this morning that A&M-Corpus Christi was awarded a forfeit win over HBU from Sept. 10 due to the Huskies having an ineligible student-athlete participating. The game originally ended in a tie.

Murray's goal put the Islanders on the board in the 24th minute. It came on a shot into the lower left corner. It was her seventh career goal and third this year.

Nicholls (0-15, 0-10 SLC) evened it on a score by Koryn Barrett in the 40th minute to send the game deadlocked into the half.

The game-winner came off the foot of Palomino in the 62nd minute. She was assisted by senior Reaghan Lang and sophomore Olivia Alvarez. Palomino notched her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

"I saw fight today. I saw a team that was prepared to play ugly and was determined that not winning was not an option," said head coach Craig Shaw.

For the match, the Islanders outshot the Colonels 14-7, including a 9-2 edge in the second half. A&M-Corpus Christi also held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.

It was the fifth of a six-game road stretch for the Islanders, who are going over a month between home games. They'll wrap-up it up Sunday at 1 p.m. at Southeastern. The Islanders tied the Lady Lions 1-1 earlier this season in Corpus Christi on a goal by freshman Megan Guy.
