LAKE CHARLES, La. – The offense came to life in the second half for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer program with a pair of goals, but McNeese was able to hang on for a 3-2 decision Sunday at Cowgirl Field.
Â
The Islanders (4-9-2, 2-5-2 SLC) trailed the Cowgirls (10-4-2, 7-2-1 SLC) by two goals in the second half when junior
Samantha Palomino cut the deficit in half 2-1. Her finish was into the lower left corner after a feed from sophomore
Olivia Alvarez.
Â
After McNeese answered back with a tally in the 83rd minute, A&M-Corpus Christi kept battling and was awarded a penalty kick. Senior
Reaghan Lang tucked it home to make it a 3-2 game with just over five minutes left.
Â
Though, the Cowgirls were able lock it in defensively in the closing ticks for the result. A&M-Corpus Christi outshot McNeese 6-4 in the second half.
Â
"If we showed up first half we would have beaten the beat team in the conference. But our young team took eight fifth-year seniors to the wire," said head coach
Craig Shaw. "Plenty of positives from this weekend despite the results."
Â
Palomino notched her fifth goal of the year, while Lang recorded her fourth.
Â
Also with shots for the Islanders were sophomores
Maggie Murray and
Molly Arens, and junior
Maddie Janolo.
Â
Freshman
Emma Crump logged 90 minutes on the back line. Freshman
Emily Levy registered three saves in net.
Â
The Islanders will continue their six-game road trip next weekend with games at Nicholls and Southeastern. It begins with a 4 p.m. match-up against the Colonels.
