Islanders Put Forth Valiant Effort at ITA Texas Regionals

Men's Draws | Women's Draws

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas –
Five men and two women from the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tennis programs reached the main draws in singles on Saturday at ITA Texas Regionals, hosted by Texas A&M for the men and TCU for the women.

Junior Matthieu Peres highlighted the weekend with a first round victory in the main draw over 10th-seeded Cleeve Harper from Texas. The match was tied 5-5 in the first set when Harper, who was ranked No. 94 in the nation in 2021, retired.

Peres reached the round of 32 before getting knocked out by Matthis Ross from Texas A&M 6-4, 6-2. Ross transferred from Virginia Tech where he was ranked No. 86 in the country in 2021.

Also in the main singles bracket were senior Kyohei Yamanaka, sophomore Ryuya Ata, sophomore Nathan Schwartz and sophomore Guillermo Castaneda.

The men also picked up a win in the main doubles draw. The team of Yamanaka and Ata defeated SMU's Eli Susser and Alex Stafford 8-2.

Overall between the main and qualifying draws, the men totaled 10 wins including victories over Texas, SMU, Rice, Abilene Christian and UTRGV.

On the women's side, junior Camille Townsend and sophomore Emma Aucagne reached the main draw after winning a pair of qualifying matches each. Townsend put up a fight against 15th-seeded Alison Zipoli from Rice 6-4, 6-3, while Aucagne went toe-to-toe with 13th-seeded Gianna Pielet from Texas A&M 6-4, 7-5.

In doubles, Aucagne and sophomore Emma Honore picked up a first round win over Sam Houston's Lusine Chobanyan and Petra Kaszas 8-4. Aucagne and Honore are no strangers to big wins after defeating Baylor in the NCAA Tournament last season.

"I'm so proud of our Islander men and women! They won 15 matches at the toughest regionals in the nation! It's really a validation that hard-working character pay off! These kids have just worked incredibly hard this fall! Their commitment to fitness, and discipline has been awesome. This group is a joy to coach, so fun to travel with and the team unity is just amazing to be around," said head coach Steve Moore. "We are really proud of them."

A&M-Corpus Christi will conclude the fall season next weekend when it hosts the Islander Open at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. Play begins Friday morning.
