SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer program pushed for an equalizing goal in the final five minutes but were held off by Incarnate Word in a 3-1 final on Friday at Benson Stadium.

The Islanders (4-6-2, 2-2-2 SLC) trailed 2-0 when they cut the deficit in half in the 86th minute. It came on a penalty kick as senior
Reaghan Lang calmly placed the ball into the lower left corner of the net for her third goal of the season.

Down by one, A&M-Corpus Christi pushed everyone forward on a throw-in deep in UIW (2-8-1, 2-3 SLC) territory. However, the Cardinals were able to defend it and pushed the other way on a counterattack that resulted in a tally in the 87th minute.

The Cardinals built a lead by scoring a pair of goals early in the game.

"This is what happens when you don't show up in the first 10 minutes. We had more chances, but UIW took care of theirs. We have to learn fast," said head coach
Craig Shaw.

Six different Islanders recorded a shot in the game. It included Lang, sophomore
Jayden Rea, freshman
Megan Guy, freshman
Ellie Fox, freshman
Morgan Westbury, and sophomore
Natalie Gonzalez.

A&M-Corpus Christi used 21 student-athletes in the contest. Guy and freshman
Gracie Gill logged a team-high 79 minutes apiece.

In net, sophomore
Kennedy Stelling got the start and made 12 saves.

A&M-Corpus Christi, which played its first of six consecutive road matches, is now 2-2-1 all-time in road games at UIW.

Up next, A&M-Corpus Christi will head to HBU for a 7 p.m. road match Thursday. The Islanders will be going for their first-ever win over the Huskies in school history. The two teams tied 1-1 earlier this season in Corpus Christi after a goal by junior
Samantha Palomino.
