CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – One win away from 500 in his career, head coach
Steve Moore goes for the half grand milestone Monday when the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs host Prairie View A&M in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at the Henry Tennis Center.
Â
Moore sits at 499 career wins. The 11-time SLC Coach of the Year winner has coached the team to 11 NCAA Tournaments, 25 SLC Championships, 4 Top-40 National Rankings and 31 straight semesters with a GPA above 3.0.
Â
"We are excited for the chance to compete tomorrow as a unified family, try to get better and play every point with intensity," Moore said. "We respect PVAMU greatly and Duane Williams is a long-time respected coach and friend. Every match is the same for us and we have to max out three things we can control: did we play with incredible energy, did we cheer and encourage each other with an avalanche of positive support and did we play every point with intensity, tough and smart?"
Â
Both the men and women are undefeated this season. The men are 7-0 and coming off a 4-1 win over UL-Lafayette, while the women are 5-0 with a 4-0 sweep over UTSA in their last outing.
Â
The men are 35-2 in singles and 18-2 in doubles on the year. Freshman
Carlos Berna Ruiz is the reigning Southland Conference Player of the Week winner and hoists a 6-0 singles record, mostly at the No. 5 position. The No. 1 doubles team of junior
Kyohei Yamanaka and freshman Rya Ata are 4-0 together.
Â
The women are 23-1 in singles and 13-1 in doubles. Sophomore
Mariya Shumeika is 5-0 in both singles and doubles, mainly playing No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles with sophomore
Camille Townsend.
Â
It will be the second meetings against PVAMU this season as both the men and women swept doubleheaders in the season opener. A&M-Corpus Christi is 56-0 all-time against PVAMU, including a 29-0 mark for the men and 27-0 for the women.
