CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Making their first appearances at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center this season, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs will host Trinity in a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
Â
"This is such a high character team that's getting better every day and is really committed to the process of playing every present point separately with intensity. That's the key to tennis and really all sports – to bring it every point tough and smart," said head coach
Steve Moore.
Â
Moore is nine wins away from reaching 500 in his career and sits at 491. The 11-time SLC Coach of the Year winner has coached the team to 11 NCAA Tournaments, 25 SLC Championships, 4 Top-40 National Rankings and 31 straight semesters with a GPA above 3.0.
Â
Both the men and women opened the 2021 campaign by sweeping a doubleheader over Prairie View A&M on Wednesday. The Islanders combined to outscore the Panthers 20-2 over the four matches.
Â
Freshman
Carlos Berna Ruiz picked up two wins in both singles and doubles. He garnered victories at No. 2 and 4 singles, and teamed with freshman
Pascal Lorieul and No. 1 and 2 doubles. The men went 8-1 in the doubleheader in singles.
Â
The women saw sophomore
Mariya Shumeika posted a 4-0 day against PVAMU, which included wins at No. 1 and 2 singles, and doubles victories at the No. 1 position with sophomore
Camille Townsend. The Islanders registered a 6-0 doubles mark and 8-1 singles on the day.
Â
The Trinity men opened the season with a 4-3 win over Rice. The women have not played a match yet but ended 6-5 last year in a shortened season.
Â
"Trinity is a very good team who's been national champions in Division III and a very challenging opponent. This will be a good test of where we stand with our process to play every point with intensity, not three out of four," Moore said.
Â
The A&M-Corpus Christi men are 6-0 all-time against Trinity, while the women are 3-2.
