SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball program came out of the gates hot, but UIW used a pair of big runs to come back and ultimately pull away in the second half for a 72-53 final Saturday at the McDermott Center.
The Islanders (3-9, 0-3 SLC) held leads of 16-6 and 26-17 in the first half, but UIW (6-6, 3-2 SLC) ended the half on a 13-3 run and then scored the first seven points of the second half to swing the momentum. The Cardinals knocked down shots midway through the second half to further create separation.
Sophomore
Jalen White netted a game-high 17 points. Seniors
Myles Smith and
Peyton Smith pitched in with nine points apiece and senior
Perry Francois pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
The Cardinals were led by Logan Bracamonte and Keaston Willis who scored 15 points apiece.
The Islanders led 8-3 after senior
Nolan Bertain and
Peyton Smith knocked down three-pointers. An old-fashion three-point play by White and a drive by
Myles Smith extended it to 16-6, as UIW called timeout at the 13:58 mark.
UIW got back in it with an 8-0 run, which included a pair of threes to trail 16-14 with 9:49 remaining. A lay-up by junior
De'Lazarus Keys and a jumper by
Myles Smith helped get the edge back up to 26-17 with 4:59 to go, but the Cardinals ended the half on a 13-3 run to jump in front 30-28.
It continued into a 20-3 run in the second half after the Cardinals scored the first seven points to lead 37-28. After
Peyton Smith knocked down a three-pointer to make it 40-35, UIW responded with a 14-0 run to push its advantage up to 54-35 with 11:59 left.
UIW's largest lead of the contest was 66-43 with 6:19 remaining.
The game wrapped-up a three-game road trip for A&M-Corpus Christi. The Islanders will begin a five-game home stand Wednesday when they host Sam Houston at 7 p.m. at the American Bank Center. A&M-Corpus Christi is 201-95 all-time at home and 133-68 in the American Bank Center.
NOTES
- The Islanders are now 9-5 all-time against the Cardinals and have won four of the last five meetings.
- White notched his fourth double-figure scoring game in his last five outings. It was the third time this season that he's scored over 15 points. He was 6-of-13 from the floor.
- A&M-Corpus Christi was shorthanded and continued to play without junior
Rasheed Browne, junior
Simeon Fryer and sophomore
Jordan Hairston, all are significant contributors.
- Wilson is now 90-73 in his career against Southland Conference opponents.
