Islanders Begin Championship Journey at PVAMU; Seek 13th NCAA Tournament, 27th SLC Title

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs will begin the 2021 season Wednesday when they travel to Prairie View A&M for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at the PVAMU Tennis Courts.

Head coach Steve Moore enters the year eyeing 500 career wins as he currently sits at 487. The 11-time SLC Coach of the Year winner has coached the team to 11 NCAA Tournaments, 25 SLC Championships, 4 Top-40 National Rankings and 31 straight semesters with a GPA above 3.0.

Both the men and women feature young squads. On the men's side, junior Kyohei Yamanaka is expected to play at the top of the lineup and has significantly developed after beginning his Islander career near the bottom. Yamanaka finished a perfect 12-0 last year in a shortened season.

Of the nine men on the roster, seven are freshmen. The Islanders were 12-6 overall in 2020 before COVID-19 canceled the season.

The women are just as young and don't have a single upperclassman on the team. The roster features three sophomores and five freshmen. The team concluded 13-3 overall last year and bring back their top two players in the lineup, sophomores Mariya Shumeika and Camille Townsend.

The women's incoming recruiting class was ranked No. 12 nationally among mid-majors by tennisrecruiting.net.

Both the men and women swept the season series over PVAMU last year. The Islanders are a combined 53-0 all-time against the Panthers, as the men are 28-0 and the women are 25-0.
