HAMMOND, La. – Playing its first game in 22 days, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball program will begin Southland Conference play Wednesday at Southeastern Louisiana at 7 p.m. at the University Center.
It will be the start of a four-game road trip for A&M-Corpus Christi (3-6, 0-0 SLC) as the schedule shifted due to postponements. The Islanders had their final two non-conference games canceled and first three league games postponed due to COVID-19 protocols within the program.
The game at SLU (2-9, 0-2 SLC) was originally scheduled for Jan. 2.
A&M-Corpus Christi won its final two non-conference games. In the team's last outing on Dec. 22, the Islanders shut down Paul Quinn 59-35 and allowed just 11 points in the first half. The Islanders didn't give up a three-pointer in a game for the first time since Feb. 1, 2014 when Lamar went 0-for-4, as Paul Quinn finished 0-for-10.
Prior to Paul Quinn, they posted a 99-72 victory over Our Lady of the Lake. Senior
Myles Smith tied the program record for assists in a game with 12. Sophomore
Jalen White registered a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds, and senior
Perry Francois tallied career-highs of 22 points and nine rebounds.
Francois leads the Southland Conference and ranks 14th in the nation in field goal percentage with a .632 mark. He's the team's leading scorer with 11.6 points per game and also ranks third in the SLC in blocks with 1.4 per outing.
White is the team's leading rebounder with 6.1 per game and is also second on the squad in scoring with 10.4 per outing. He has two double-doubles this year and opened the season with 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in a win over Texas A&M-International.
SLU opened conference play with defeats to Sam Houston State 70-52 and Nicholls 87-67. The Lions have wins this year over California Baptist 81-80 and Grambling State 77-70.
The Lions were picked to finish 11th out of 13 in the SLC Preseason Poll. Keon Clergeot leads the team with 14.0 points per game and shoots .366 from three-point range.
