Cohea wins Heptathlon on final day of Southland Championships

Story Headlines
- Colton Cohea won the Heptathlon as the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi track and field teams completed competition at the 2020 Southland Indoor Championships on Monday.
- In all, the Islanders set four school records on Monday and had 11 top-eight finishes.
- The Islander women scored 31 points and finished eighth in the team standings. Stephen F. Austin took the women's team title.
- The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men scored 41 points and placed 10th in the team standings. Southeastern Louisiana won the team title.
- The meet was held at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Ala.

Men's Highlights
- Cohea moved all the way up to first place in the Heptathlon with three strong performances on Monday. He was eighth in the 60m hurdles, second in the pole vault and was fifth in the 1,000m run to win by 39 points. Scott Boon from HBU took second overall and won the 1,000m run but couldn't overcome the lead Cohea had built.
- Timor Barrett capped a strong indoor championship meet by competing in four event finals. He made the stand in the 60m hurdles, finishing third in 8.06. He took seventh in the 200m dash in 21.80 and was eighth in the 400m dash in 48.14.
- In the final event, Barrett, Terrion Spivey, Kwesi Henderson and Dubem Nwachukwu set a school record in the 4x400 relay, running 3:12.57 to win their heat and take fourth overall.
- Nwachukwu set the school record in the 400m dash, finishing sixth in 47.63.
- Isaac Vargas took eighth in the 3,000m run, finishing in 8:38.28.

Women's Highlights
- Valentina Campos earned her second medal of the championships, finishing third in the 3,000m run in a personal best time of 9:58.52.
- Larissa Manciaz ran a personal best 56.29 to take fifth in the 400m dash.
- Erika Snyder had a season-best clearance of 1.65m (5-5) in the high jump to take seventh overall.
- Manciaz, Sierra Pruitt, Makalah Griffin and Devon Polk set the school record in the 4x400m relay, finishing eighth in 3:49.28
