Islanders fall in opening two games of Texas tournament

Story Headlines
- The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team fell in its opening two games of the 2020 season to Colorado State, 1-0 and Wichita State, 14-4 on Friday at the University of Texas tournament in Austin, Texas. 
- Today's two matchups against the Rams and Shockers mark the Islander debut for first year head coach Kristen Zaleski

Game One vs. Colorado State
- After allowing a run in the top of the 1st on a sacrifice fly, sophomore pitcher Jenika Lombrana pitched four complete innings, giving up only four hits and retiring 10 batters. She also struck out two Rams in 15 at bats for a solid career debut for the Blue and Green.
- Freshman Sydney Hoyt came in relief for the final two innings of play, recording one strikeout and retiring four batters. 
- Freshman Gabriella Torres went two-for-three at the plate including two singles. 
- Ashleigh Sgambelluri batted one-for-three which included a double. 
- The Islanders mounted a late inning rally in the 7th, as Sammi Thomas walked followed by a single from Torres to put two on with one out. After a fly out to the infield, Alexandria Torres reached on a fielder's choice while Thomas and Torres each advanced safely to second and third with two outs. 
- The Rams were able to get the final strikeout of the inning to edge the A&M-Corpus Christi, 1-0. 
- It was a pitcher's dual throughout the duration of the game, as both offenses combined for just seven hits, one run and 15 runners left on base. 

Game two vs. Wichita State
- In the final game of the day for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, the Shockers jumped out in front with seven runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. 
- After Wichita State added its eighth run in the bottom of the 2nd, the Islanders got on the board in the top half of the next inning courtesy of a solo home run from Sgambelluri to left center field on a 1-0 count. 
- The Blue and Green added three more runs in the top of the 4th. After Tiare Lee led off with a five pitch walk, Daisy Gonzalez singled through the left side to put two runners on with no outs. Following a line out to second base, Hoyt stepped into the box and sent a three run home run over the left field fence on a 2-2 count. The Islanders cut the Shockers lead to five after 3 1/2 innings. 
- Wichita State collected its ninth run of the day in bottom of the 4th on a RBI-single to center field. The Shockers closed the game out in the bottom of the 5th inning with five runs, making the final score 14-4. 
- Senior Kandace Johnson got the game two start in the circle and recorded one strikeout, while both Hoyt and Alexis Ruel came to pitch in relief. Hoyt also led the offense, batting two-of-three including a three run home run and a run scored.
- Sgambelluri, Lee and Gonzalez all collected a hit and a run scored.
