A&M-Corpus Christi Readies for Under-the-Radar OLLU Squad

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas –
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball program will play Our Lady of the Lake at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Dugan Wellness Center.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi (1-6) is prepping for an OLLU (1-1) squad that defeated Texas State 61-58 in its last outing.
 
The Islanders have seen senior Nolan Bertain heat up over the last couple of games. He's coming off a career game at Texas State where he netted a career-high 19 points and was 6-for-9 from the field, 3-for-4 from beyond-the-arc and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. He made his first start of the season.
 
At No. 17 Texas Tech, Bertain tallied 12 points and was 3-for-4 from long-range. Junior Simeon Fryer scored a career-high 10 points.
 
As a team, the Islanders have used a very balanced scoring attack this year. Senior Perry Francois averages a team-high 10.0 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi has six student-athletes averaging over 6.0 points per game including junior Rasheed Browne (9.0), Bertain (7.7), sophomore Jalen White (7.4), senior Myles Smith (6.9) and sophomore Jordan Hairston (6.8).
 
Prior to defeating Texas State, the Saints played fellow Southland Conference member Incarnate Word tough and dropped an 84-71 final. In the win over the Bobcats, they held Texas State to just a .348 (23-66) shooting percentage and .182 (4-22) from long-range.
 
David Johnson leads the Saints with 18.0 points per game. Ruben Monzon is a 6-5 forward that plays big and records 14 points and 8.5 rebounds per outing.

NOTES
- A&M-Corpus Christi is 5-0 all-time against OLLU with a 113-83 win in the last meeting on Nov. 9, 2018.
 
- The program is 199-95 all-time at home.

- The Islanders rank second in the league in both blocks (3.57 bpg) and free throw percentage (.726). Francois swats 1.4 blocks per game, which is fourth in the league.
 
- Bertain is a perfect 16-for-16 from the free throw line this year. He's two of three Islanders who rank top-three in the conference in free throw percentage along with Browne who shoots at a .864 clip and ranks third.
 
- Head coach Willis Wilson has won 139 games overall since arriving at The Island University and is the program's career leader in coaching victories. He surpassed Ronnie Arrow for the most victories at A&M-Corpus Christi who had 134 from 1999-07.
