Women’s Basketball Tips Off South Texas Showdown at UTRGV Wednesday, Doubleheader with Men

EDINBURG, Texas – The 2020-21 installment of the South Texas Showdown will begin Wednesday at 4 p.m. when the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball program travels to UTRGV at Bert Ogden Arena.
 
The game will be part of a doubleheader as the men take on the Vaqueros right after at 7 p.m.
 
The South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, is an annual competition between A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV where they compete against each other in 12 sports. As an institution, the Islanders lead the series 3-1.
 
Wednesday will be the fourth game of the season for the Islanders (0-3). Sophomore Alecia Westbrook has stood out and average team-highs of 14.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game. She posted a career-high 17 points at Wichita State, and followed it up with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds in her last outing at Kansas.
 
Freshman Paige Allen is off to a strong start to her collegiate career. She's averaging 9.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game. Allen scored 12 points in the season opener against Texas A&M-International and 13 points at Wichita State.
 
Sophomore Hayle Campbell is coming off one of her best games as she matched her career-high with 12 points at Kansas. Campbell was 5-of-10 from the floor.
 
The Vaqueros (1-1) opened the season with an 89-56 defeat to Texas Tech, but bounced back with a 60-50 victory over UTSA on Monday. Of the 58.0 points per game that the team is averaging, Amara Graham puts in 18.0 of them and shoots .542 from the field.
 
UTRGV was picked to finish fifth in the WAC Preseason Coaches Poll. The program finished 13-17 overall and 8-8 in the WAC last year.

NOTES
- A&M-Corpus Christi carries a 23-12 advantage over the Vaqueros in the all-time series. The Islanders swept the season-series last year, winning 61-50 at home and 59-54 on the road.
 
- Westbrook was tabbed Honorable Mention for SLC Player of the Week on Monday. Last season, she shot a team-high .520 from the field (top-five all-time in single-season history) and set the program record for most blocks for a freshman with 30.
 
- The Islanders are the defending Southland Conference Regular season champions after finishing the year 23-7 overall and 17-3 SLC. The conference tournament was canceled due to COVID-19. The 17-3 SLC record was the best-ever in program history.
 
- Head coach Royce Chadwick is the reigning SLC Coach of the Year winner. He's in his ninth season at the helm and 37th year overall as a head coach. Chadwick is 15 wins away from becoming the winningest coach in an SLC career. He's chasing James Smith's mark of 339 wins at Northwestern State from 1987-04. Chadwick has 324 wins including 31 from SHSU, 173 from SFA and 120 as an Islander.
