LAWRENCE, Kan. – Sophomore
Hayle Campbell matched her career-high in scoring, but the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball program finished on the short end of an 85-43 final at Kansas on Sunday at Allen Fieldhouse.
Campbell was 5-of-10 from the floor to lead the Islanders (0-3) with 12 points.
Sophomore
Alecia Westbrook also had a big day to continue her strong 2020-21 campaign as she submitted a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. The 10 rebounds matched a career-high.
A&M-Corpus Christi pulled down 15 offensive rebounds as a team, including five from Westbrook and outscored the Jayhawks (2-0) in second chance points.
The Jayhawks were paced by Holly Kersgieter who scored a game-high 17 points and shot 5-for-6 from long range.
Kansas scored the first 15 points of the game. The first bucket for the Islanders was a three-pointer by junior
Torrionna Nesbitt with 5:30 remaining. Campbell followed with a fast-break layup after a steal by freshman
Mireia Aguado for a 5-0 run.
The Jayhawks were able to build their lead to 17 points at the quarter and 27 at the half. A&M-Corpus Christi mixed and matched its lineups throughout the game as 12 different student-athletes saw action.
The Islanders will conclude a three-game road trip at UT-Rio Grande Valley at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Their next home game is Saturday, Dec. 5 when they host St. Edwards at 2 p.m. in the Dugan Wellness Center.
NOTES
- It was the first-ever meeting between A&M-Corpus Christi and Kansas.
- Campbell's 12 points tied her career-high set against Huston Tillotson on Nov. 26, 2019. Her five field goals made marked a career-high. Campbell netted her third career double-digit scoring game.
- Westbrook secured 10 rebounds for the third time in her career and first time this season. Her double-double was the second of her career. Westbrook has reached double-figures in scoring in all three games this year and eight times in her career.
- A&M-Corpus Christi's next game against UTRGV will tip-off the annual South Texas Showdown, an all-sports competition between the two institutions. The Islanders hold a 3-1 edge in the rivalry, and are 23-12 all-time against the Vaqueros in women's basketball.
