CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi released the 2020-2021 Islanders men's basketball schedule on Friday morning. The schedule includes a 16-game Southland conference schedule along with 11 non-conference contests highlighted by two Big 12 opponents and several familiar in-state rivals. The schedule features 14 home games to be played in Corpus Christi.
"This year's schedule is going to be one of the most challenging we have faced in the time I've been the head coach here at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi," said Coach
Willis Wilson. "I am excited to see how we handle the competition, but I am confident our guys will do well with all of the hard work they have been putting in this fall."
The Islanders will open the season at home with a pair of games at the American Bank Center, starting on Wednesday, Nov. 25
th against Texas A&M International University. The Islanders return to the court on Saturday, Nov. 28
th against in-state rival Texas State. The Islanders will round out November with a road trip to Dallas to take on SMU on November 30
th.
The first installment of the South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union, takes place on Wednesday, Dec. 2
nd at Edinburgh, TX against UTRGV. The Islanders return home to take on Arlington Baptist at 7:00 pm on Friday, December 4
th at the Dugan Wellness Center. The return game against UTRGV in Corpus Christi is slated for Thursday, Dec. 10
th at the American Bank Center.
The Islanders will get a road test in December as four of seven games are played on the road in four different cities in Texas. One of the marquee matchups on this year's schedule takes place on Saturday, Dec. 12
th against 2019 NCAA Tournament Runner-Up Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. On Tuesday, Dec. 15
th, A&M-Corpus Christi heads to San Marcos, Texas, to take on Texas State. After a pair of at the Dugan Wellness Center against Our Lady of the Lake University (Saturday, Dec. 19
th) and Paul Quinn College (Wednesday, December 23
rd) the Islanders will head to Austin, Texas, to take on their second Big 12 opponent, the University of Texas, for their final non-conference game of the year on Tuesday, Dec. 29
th.
The Southland home slate includes 8 contests beginning with preseason conference favorite Stephen F. Austin (Wednesday, Jan. 6), followed by Abilene Christian (Saturday, Jan. 9), Sam Houston State (Wednesday, Jan. 27), Houston Baptist (Saturday, Jan. 30), Incarnate-Word (Saturday, Feb. 6), Southeastern Louisiana (Wednesday, Feb. 17), Lamar (Saturday, Feb. 20), and University of New Orleans (Wednesday, Feb. 24).
The conference road schedule begins on Saturday, Jan. 2
nd at Southeastern Louisiana, followed by games at Lamar (Saturday, Jan. 16), New Orleans (Wednesday, Jan. 20), Incarnate-Word (Saturday, Jan. 23), Stephen F. Austin (Wednesday, Feb.10), Abilene Christian (Saturday, Feb. 13), Sam Houston State (Wednesday, Mar. 3) and Houston Baptist (Saturday, Mar. 6).
The 2020 Southland Conference Championship Tournament will begin on Wednesday, Mar. 10th at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.
It should be noted that undertaking this schedule will be contingent upon current health conditions in each university community and following guidance from the NCAA, Southland Conference and local medical authorities. Game management details, ticketing and attendance matters, media and broadcast issues, and other operational details will be determined by the Southland and the host institutions.
