Women's Basketball opens Southland Tournament with No. 7 UNO

KATY, Texas -- The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi women's basketball team (14-15, 8-10 Southland) kicks off the first round of the 2019 Southland Conference Tournament with seventh-seeded New Orleans (12-15, 8-10 Southland) on Thursday afternoon, tipoff slated for 1:30 p.m. at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas. The Islanders managed to split the home-and-home series against UNO this season, initially knocking off the Privateers by a 57-51 margin at home before dropping a two-point loss in Louisiana. Individually, Alexes Bryant led the way in both matchups for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, posting a pair of double-doubles. All-time, the Blue & Green own a slight edge over the Privateers, holding an 8-3 overall mark with a 1-0 neutral record.

• Royce Chadwick closes out his seventh season leading Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and 35th overall year as head coach, sporting a 657-417 record.
• The Islanders 19-win season last year marked Chadwick's best finish with A&M-Corpus Christi since his arrival in 2012.
• The team sports one lone senior: F Uri Jolivette.
• This year's roster is highlighted by four newcomers, as juniors Alexes Bryant and Arhianna Sims-Jackson transferred from junior colleges while freshmen Torrionna Nesbitt and Makinna Serrata signed on directly from high school.
• This season's depth chart features 10 players from across the state of Texas, and one from each of the following: Louisiana, Kentucky and California.
• The Islanders were picked fifth in the Southland Conference Preseason Poll.
