Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Islanders upend Stephen F. Austin in statement victory, 46-44

Story Headlines
- The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi women's basketball program (13-11, 7-6 Southland) defensively suffocated league-leading Stephen F. Austin (21-4, 12-1 Southland) to its first conference loss of the season, securing a decisive 46-44 victory Wednesday evening at the Dugan Wellness Center.
- In what amounts to little surprise, junior Alexes Bryant continued to dominate down low, serving up her fourth-consecutive double-double behind a 10 point, 11 rebound performance against the Ladyjacks. Over the course of the past four games, the junior forward has acted as the Islanders' go-to playmaker on both ends of the court, averaging 13.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 5.5 blocks during that span. Notably, the center added another two blocks to her already record-setting numbers, vaulting up to a grand total of 59 on the season for the category.
- Fellow junior La'Janeira Robinson posted the Islanders' only other double-digit point performance on the night (13 points), tying a career-high as she led the team in the category for the first time all year. The point guard also pulled down four rebounds and dished out one assist.

Key Islander Statistics
- For the game, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi closed out the competition shooting 37.7 percent (20-of-53) from the floor, 25.0 percent (4-of-16) beyond the arc and 40.0 percent (2-of-5) at the charity stripe.
- Down two points late with less than 15 seconds remaining, the Ladyjacks received a pair of opportunities to force overtime or steal the win, missing on both occasions to seal the Blue & Green victory.
- The Islanders pushed their advantage to as large as nine points early in the fourth quarter (9:00), but an SFA run to close the final period pulled the Ladyjacks within one with under a minute remaining.
- Despite Stephen F. Austin forcing more turnovers (20-to-16) overall, A&M-Corpus Christi managed to notch a much higher rate of point-conversion in the category, outpacing the Ladyjacks 17-to-7 on the night. Further, the Islanders outworked SFA on the glass consistently throughout the game, pulling down 40 rebounds to the Ladyjack's 27, resulting in a lopsided second-chance points result in favor of the Blue & Green (12-to-3).
- Junior forwards Dalesia Booth and Tiara Matthews put together major contributions on the night as well, combining for 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
- Meanwhile, true freshman Makinna Serrata received her second-straight start and third overall as an Islander, adding four points with six rebounds.

Up Next
- Bolstered by tonight's upset win over Stephen F. Austin, the Islanders carry a surge of momentum into Saturday afternoon's rematch against Southland No. 2 Lamar, tipoff with the Cardinals scheduled for 1 p.m. at the American Bank Center.
