HAMMOND, La. - A couple of crooked-digit innings for hosts Southeastern Louisiana put Texas A&M-Corpus Christi behind the eight ball early on Friday, as the Lions took game one of this weekend's series 10-1.
After a scoreless opening frame, SELU would hang four through the following two innings to give the home team an early lead, but the Islanders would cut into that advantage in the fourth. Taking a hit by pitch to lead off the inning,
Nick Anderson gave the Blue and Green their first base runner of the frame, before second baseman
Andriud Martinez found himself on first, thanks to a Lion error. The junior found home plate later in the inning thanks to a
Dalton Stark RBI single, as the Islanders cut into the home team's lead at 4-1.
Southeastern continued its hot start during the bottom half of the frame however, putting up another three runs to secure a 7-1 lead for the Lions, headed to the fifth.
Jesse Philp would provide some quality relief for the Islanders, coming on in the fifth, holding the Lions to a single earned run with three strikeouts over 2.1 innings on the bump. The southpaw, along with right hander
Tate Gillespie, would account for five of the Blue and Green's 10 Ks on the day, as the final score would favor the home team 10-1.
- Jackson Owens was responsible for two of the Islanders' five hits on Friday, recording a pair of singles in the third and fifth innings. The third baseman has recorded eight multi-hit efforts in 2018
- Starting left fielder Itchy Burts bunted for a hit against the Lions, giving the sophomore three hits in his last two games. He's currently riding a six-game hit streak when getting the starting nod
- Philp's performance was his longest outing of the 2018 campaign, improving his K/9 to an impressive 11.58
- Stark recorded the Islanders' lone RBI of the day. His total for the year has jumped to 13, after driving in six runs in his last nine appearances
- Andriud Martinez' bat has been heating up as of late. His single against the Lions gives him a knock in six of his last seven games played
