CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi took a loss in the first leg of this year's home-and-home series with UTSA, dropping a 6-1 decision at Chapman Field this Tuesday.
Making his first midweek start of the season, right hander
Jackson Owens provided a strong start for the Islanders, holding the Roadrunners to just two runs over his 3.2 innings of work. Reliever
A.G. Ayala recorded the last out in the top half of the fourth, as the Blue and Green scored their first run of the night in the next half inning.
Back-to-back singles from
Enrique Sanchez Jr. and
Andriud Martinez put a pair of runners on base for left fielder
Luke Marbach, who stepped up to task with a single-RBI double. Trailing just 2-1, Corpus Christi would go on to surrender a pair of unearned runs with
Will Floyd and
Payton Bauer on the mound, as the two righties combined with southpaw
Cody LeCompte for three innings without an earned run against.
With his team behind by five runs, left hander
Jesse Philp took the hill for the final four outs of Tuesday's contest, to try and keep his side within striking distance. The redshirt-sophomore went perfect over his 1.1 IP, while going on to strikeout the side in the 9th. His effort allowed the Islanders an opportunity to strike back in the final frame, but three straight outs from the Blue and Green ended things at 6-1.
- Seven of the Islanders' starters recorded hits, with eight players reaching first safely
- Nick Anderson stretched his hitting streak to four straight, while collecting his 16th HBP of the year
- Islander arms combined for 11 strikeouts on the evening, with Floyd tallying a career-high of three
- Itchy Burts has hit in eight of his last nine contests, and leads the Islanders with a .356 batting average on the year
