Doubleheader Clash on the Island

Hosts are Pulled Away Duel Competition by Sam Houston State

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas- Texas A&M Corpus Christi Softball cracked open their sixth Southland Series of the 2018 season against Sam Houston State on April 13th. Hosting the Bearkats in this weekend series, the Islanders dropped both games 1-6 and 1-3 on Friday's duel.

GAME ONE
Sam Houston State started off offensively strong in this weekends SLC opener, as they were able to capitalize on a few Islander errors and pull together a four-run lead early in the second inning. Fighting to get on the field, Senior infielder Destiney Diaz set the Islanders in motion as she doubled up the middle to score Keagan Helson for an RBI late in the fourth frame. Attempting to keep this very rhythm, Sam Houston State's pitching staff held the Blue and Green to only 2 additional hits (by Keagan Helson and Katrina Jackson) for the remaining three innings of the game. With the Bearkats defense being successful on the field, SHSU extended their lead to a final score of 6-1 as they registered two final runs early in the fifth and sixth innings.

Freshman pitcher Alexis Tovar took the circle for the Blue and Green as she struck out three total batters and only walked three for all seven frames. Sam Houston State emphasized on the third inning, as they were able to register a triple, double, and single play that gave them the 3-0 lead. Freshman catcher Whitney Wendel knocked on the sheet late in the sixth inning with a run that was assisted by a single to left field from Kandace Johnson. Johnson went 4-2, as the Atascocita native was also capable of registering a single RBI against Sam Houston State. The Bearkats pitching staff repeated their performance from the first game once again as they held the Islanders to only seven total hits and a single run for the entire competition, sealing their second victory in this weekend series.
