CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas- Texas A&M Corpus Christi softball completed their sixth Southland Series, going 5-10 for the final game against Sam Houston State University on April 14th. The Bearkats pulled away the weekend competition 3-0 after Saturday's performance against the Blue and Green.
Returning from a tough battle against Sam Houston State on April 13th, losing both games 1-6 and 1-3, the Islanders stepped on the field for their final competition seeking to take a victory. SHSU started off Saturday's competition with a strong offensive tempo, yet again, registering a two-run play from a double to right field early in the first inning. The Islanders were quick to respond, as Freshman catcher
Kaylee Hoppens singled to center field to score Junior Outfielder
Keagan Helson for an RBI late in the first. With the score now being 2-1, the Bearkats were capable of extending the lead 6-1 early in the second and third inning. As SHSU's pitching staff attempted to hinder the Blue and Green's batting team for the remainder of the competition, the Islanders were able to construct a four-run frenzy that closed the lead to 6-5 late in the fourth inning. The Freshman class sparked the offensive streak for the Islanders as infielder
Avery Ratcliff doubled to right field, scoring
Whitney Wendel. Junior outfielder
Keagan Helson capped the offensive push, as she registered a three-run RBI from a moonshot over center field scoring
Avery Ratcliff and
Taelor Thomas. Now trailing by a single run at the start of the fifth inning, Sam Houston State were able to stretch their advantage, as they were able to pull together four more additional runs late in the fifth inning. Trying to rekindle the batting fortay that took place in the fourth frame, the Bearkats pithing staff were able to hold the Islanders to five total runs for the remaining two innings.
