Islanders Hand Huskies A Loss

Blue and Green drop HBU 5-3 in Sugar Land this Tuesday

SUGAR LAND, Texas - After falling behind in the first, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored five unanswered runs on Tuesday, to take their midweek contest at Houston Baptist 5-3.

Both sides had difficulties getting on the board in the early stages of the Islanders' and Huskies' matchup in Sugar Land, with the two clubs combining for just two hits in the opening four innings of play, and a 1-0 HBU lead headed into the fifth.

With Thomas Jeffries IV and Jackson Owens leading off the frame with back to back singles, starting second baseman Cam Boudreaux stepped in the box for his first RBI-opportunity of the day, scoring Jeffries on a sac fly to right field. The senior has three RBI off of three sacrifice fly outs in his last two starts, collecting a pair in the Blue and Green's finale against Southeastern Louisiana this past Sunday.

Drawing a walk to lead off the seventh, Jeffries crossed home plate for the second time on an Andriud Martinez RBI-single to right field, while back-to-back knocks from Luke Marbach and Itchy Burts gave the Islanders a 4-1 advantage going into the bottom half of the frame.

Despite falling behind, Houston Baptist stayed withing striking distance in the later innings, pulling a pair of runs back in the eighth off a pair of extra base hits. Martinez provided some insurance in the top half of the ninth however, with the second baseman driving in Drake Osborn on his second knock of the afternoon.

Right handed reliever Cole Carter struck out the side in the bottom half of the final frame to secure the Islanders win on Tuesday, on the way to recording his first save of the 2018 season and Corpus Christi's second straight victory. The senior provided six outs on the bump, surrendering just two hits while striking out five in his shutout appearance.

In his first start of the season, righty Chad Romere struck out five Husky batters in his scheduled four innings of work, giving up just a single earned run to hosting HBU. Five Islander arms combined for 11 strikeouts on the day, while lefty Cody LeCompte recorded his first ever win in an Islanders uniform.
  • Burts is currently on a five-game hitting streak, going 10-for-22 (.455) during that span. He's hit in all nine of his starts this season
  • Enrique Sanchez Jr. went two-for-four from the plate, he's hit in his last four starts for the Islanders
  • Martinez was perfect inside the box, hitting in both of his plate appearances with a single and a double
  • With his five Ks, Carter now has 31 strikeouts on the season, his K/9 average currently sits at 12.68
