Pair of Double-Doubles Not Enough In Beaumont

Dalesia Booth and Emma Young's double-doubles not enough to boost the Islanders over Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas - Facing the top-ranked team in the Southland, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi came within six points of dropping Lamar in Saturday's 65-59 loss. Sophomores Emma Young and Dalesia Booth each tallied double-doubles on the afternoon, with the latter picking up her third of the year.

The Islanders would open up a 5-0 lead to start the contest, starting their contest against the Cardinals on a 13-4 run. With six points in the first quarter alone, Booth led all Blue and Green scorers after the opening period, while collecting four boards and a steal. Corpus Christi would take a 15-10 lead into the first break, outshooting the Cards 42.9% to 25%, and forcing nine LU turnovers.

With another three points and four rebounds in the second quarter, Booth was already nearing her double-double before the end of the half. The San Antonio-native was near perfect from the floor in the first, hitting three of her first four field goal attempts and knocking down three of four from the charity stripe. The Islanders would be held to just eight points during the second quarter however, allowing hosts Lamar to collect their first lead of the afternoon and improve their scoring average to 31.3%.

Down by a single point coming out of the break, the Islanders retook the lead on a pair of field goals from Young and Booth, but the Cardinals' 19-point third quarter would be too much for the Blue and Green to overcome, as Lamar took 21 shot attempts in the period.

Both sides would have the shooting touch in the fourth, with the Islanders and Cardinals combining for 45 points overall. Eight of Young's 10 boards came in the second half, while teammate Dae Dae Evans tallied 10 points in the latter 20 minutes of play.

Lamar's seven-point lead to begin the quarter would be too much for the Islanders however, with the score sitting at 65-59 at the final buzzer. Young and Booth would both pull down 10 rebounds apiece, with the former recording a team-high 16 points on the night.

  • Booth scored on six of 10 shots taken from the floor, finishing with 15 points on the night. She is on a streak of four straight double-digit performances, shooting 53.2% during that span
  • Booth's double-double is the third of her career, while Young's is her second
  • With a pair of rejections, Young also set a personal best in blocks against the Cardinals
  • Scoring seven points on the afternoon, Brittany Mbamalu moved into fifth all-time in Islander history, with 1,132 career points scored
