ARLINGTON, Texas - After defeating UT-Arlington 9-7 in Game 1, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi would see the Mavericks tie this weekend's series with a 6-3 decision on Saturday. All six of UTA's runs would come during the third inning, as the Islanders' 10 hits were not enough to over come the Mavericks' early lead.
With both teams held scoreless through the top of the third, the Mavericks would bat around in the third, scoring six runs off of six hits and a trio of walks. Senior
Jackson Owens would tally his first extra-base knock of the season with a double in the second, while catcher
Drake Osborn recorded the only other Islander hit in the opening third of play with a single.
The Blue and Green would cut back into the Mavericks lead immediately, with
Harrison DiNicola getting on base to lead the fourth, before teammate
Nick Anderson dropped his first bomb of the year on a fly ball to left. Anderson's homer is the Islanders' second of the year, after Dinicola's grand slam in the season opener, and gives the outfielder six jacks in his career.
Dalton Stark would get his first knock of the contest in the next at-bat, eventually brought in on an
Andriud Martinez groundout to put the score at 6-3 and round out the scoring for the frame.
The Islanders were kept quiet in the scoring column for the remainder of Saturday's contest, save for four hits and a pair of walks, as the final score would remain at 6-3, and even the weekend series at one win apiece.
Four Islander arms made their Blue and Green debuts out of the pen, as
Cody LeCompte,
Tate Gillespie,
Payton Bauer and
Will Floyd combined for 5.2 innings of shutout baseball. Gillespie faced just one over the minimum in his 2.2 frames, surrendering a single walk during his time at the bump. Floyd retired the final UTA batter of the evening, as the Blue and Green staff combined for four strikeouts on the afternoon.
