Islanders fall at Tennessee on Sunday

Story Headlines
- The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi men's basketball team fell to the University of Tennessee, 79-51, on Sunday at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tenn.
- The Islanders fall to 4-4 overall while the Volunteers improved to 6-1. Tennessee entered the day ranked No. 6 by the AP and No. 7 in the USA Today Coaches poll.
- Myles Smith scored a team-high 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting. He hit three long range shots and finished with two rebounds and two assists in 32 minutes of action.

Key Islander Sequence
- Texas A&M-Corpus Christi got off to a fast start, scoring eight of the game's first 10 points. The Volunteers won the tip but the Islander defense forced a turnover. On the ensuing possession, Talton knocked down a three off a feed from Smith. Tennessee's next two offensive trips included a turnover on a steal from South and a missed shot. Toney gave A&M-Corpus Christi a 6-0 lead as he knocked down a contested three. The Volunteers got on the board with a dunk but the Islanders answered right back as Smith drove and made a quick pass underneath to Schmidt for the bucket to make it 8-2 at the 17:29 mark in the first half.

- Smith came out firing in the second half, scoring the Islanders' first 11 points including three makes from long range along with a driving layup. Defensively, A&M-Corpus Christi forced a pair of Volunteer turnovers with steals from Toney and South.

Notables
- Sunday was just the second all-time meeting between Tennessee and a Southland Conference opponent. The Volunteers beat Southeastern Louisiana, 79-58, on Nov. 22, 1985.
- Smith's three made three pointers are tied for the individual most against a Tennessee opponent this season.
- The Islanders' nine made three pointers are the highest total this year, surpassing the eight made against Our Lady of the Lake on Nov. 9.
- Sunday marked the fourth time this year that Smith has led the team in scoring.
- This was the third time this season the Islanders have made more three pointers than their opponent.
- South has now led the team in rebounding three times this year.
