Story Headlines
- Despite slipping behind early and facing a deficit as large as 20 points, the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi women's basketball program (3-3, 0-0 Southland) battled back to within two late in fourth quarter against Prairie View A&M (3-2, 0-0 SWAC), ultimately coming up short to the Panthers by an eight-point mark, 67-59. With the loss, the Islanders close out their participation in the UTRGVÂ Tournament at 1-1, knocking off Louisiana-Lafayette in dramatic fashion Friday evening, 64-63.
- Forward
Emma Young returned to a form resembling her 2017-18 season, leading the team behind 15 points and three rebounds. The junior concluded the evening 6-of-8 at the free throw line and 1-of-1 from downtown, not to mention 4-of-8 from the field.Â
Key Islander Statistics
- In unusual fashion for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this year, the second (50 percent, 4-of-8) and the third (45.5 percent, 5-of-11) quarters proved the squad's most productive, finished the evening shooting 35.8 percent (19-of-53) from the field, 50 percent (3-of-6) beyond the arc and 64.3 percent (18-of-28) at the charity stripe, notching season highs in both free throw makes and attempts.Â
- Over the course of nearly the entire third and fourth quarters, the Islanders closed the gap from 20 (third quarter, 6:59 remaining) to just two (fourth quarter, 2:34), riding an immense defensive effort focused on full court pressure and an aggressive offensive attack. Â
- Young, who racked up a season-high 15 points on the night, partnered with fellow junior
Alexes Bryant down low to create mismatches in A&M-Corpus Christi's favor. Bryant managed to generate 11 points herself -- second best on the team -- while pulling down seven rebounds, dishing out two assists and blocking a pair of shots. Â
- A trio of juniors --
Dae Dae Evans,
Dalesia Booth and
LaJaneira Robinson -- dropped six points apiece while senior
Uri Jolivette grabbed a team season-best 10 rebounds. Â
