Women's Basketball tops St. Thomas in Season Opener, 78-40

Story Headlines
- The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi women's basketball program knocked off the University of St. Thomas by a 78-40 margin Tuesday evening at the American Bank Center on the Corpus Christi Athletic Club Court.
- For the seventh consecutive year (all under head coach Royce Chadwick), the Islanders start off the season 1-0, handidly outpacing their previous margin of victory from the previous six victories (nearly 29 points).

- Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's most effective quarter came in the fourth as they outscored St. Thomas 27-12 on the court.
- The Islanders closed the night shooting 43.7 percent from the floor, 25 percent from the three-point line, and 63.6 percent from the free-throw line
- The Blue & Green ended the night with 54 rebounds while the Celts only managed 26.
- Dalesia Booth ended the night with a team-high 18 points and seven rebounds, contributing two assists and one block as well.
- Junior College transfer Alexes Bryant added 11 points -- primarily in the paint -- six rebounds, and two blocks.
- From her point guard position, Dae Dae Evans totaled six points, four rebounds, two steals, and two assists on the night.
- Sophomore Giana Wright put in six points, six rebounds, and one steal.

Key Islander Sequences
- Despite a slow start through the first quarter, the Islanders closed the period holding a 14-5 lead over the Celts. Out of the 14 points, eight of those came from the free-throw line. Evans ended the quarter with four of her eventual six points, working to spark a squad shooting just over 21 percent from the field, while Booth closed the quarter with three points.

- In the second quarter, the Blue & Green extended their lead to a 37-16 margin, entering halftime shooting much better (52 percent). The Islanders started off the quarter with a 8-0 run with four points from Bryant, two from Emma Young, and two from Evans.

- After halftime, the Islanders continued their strong play, going on an 11-2 run to start the third quarter.

- The squad wrapped up the game with their best quarter efficiency-wise, as A&M-Corpus Christi outscored St. Thomas 27-12 to extend their lead and shot a game-best 61.1 percent from the floor.
