Key Islander Sequences
- The Islanders' strong second half got a jolt midway through the period thanks to a 7-0 run. Toney started the sequence with a three off a feed from Talton to make it a 42-38 Rattler lead. A&M-Corpus Christi got a turnover on the next possession and South hit a tough pull up jumper to cut the lead to 42-40 with 11:19 to play. Less than two minutes later, South again hit a contested jump shot to tie the game, 42-42 with 9:52 to go. St. Mary's answered with a jumper but South got open for a three and buried it off an assist from Toney to give the Islanders the lead, 46-45.
- With 1:49 to play, the Rattlers hit a layup to tie the game, 58-58. But the Islander defense would not allow another point for St. Mary's to close the game. On the next possession, the A&M-Corpus Christi ran off over a minute with a pair of big offensive rebounds from Smith and
Elijah Schmidt, eventually leading to a foul on South who calmly knocked down two go-ahead free throws with 41 seconds to play. With 24 seconds on the clock, the Rattlers missed a three pointer and Smith came down with his seventh rebound of the evening, this one resulting in a jump ball. On the inbounds play, South found an opening and streaked down court for a layup but was fouled on the attempt. South made 1-of-2 to make it a three point lead. A missed three with two seconds left by St. Mary's marked the Islanders second-straight defensive stop as Toney came down with the board as the buzzer sounded.
