SAN ANTONIO – Luke Marbach homered in the top of the first to spring Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to an early lead, but UIW responded with a monstrous offensive outburst to take the series finale 17-7 in seven innings.
Â
Â
Marbach finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored while
Cullen Jozwiak drove in three for the Islanders, but the seven runs were not nearly enough on Sunday.
Â
UIW (20-32, 8-19) hung six runs up in the bottom of the first to start its 17-run day. Islander starter
David Worrell (2-5) was unable to get out of the first inning as UIW tagged the right-hander for five runs. Worrell allowed just a single hit, but issued four walks in the opening frame.
Â
It would take three Islander pitchers to get out of the first inning and UIW's onslaught did not stop there. The Cardinals scored in each of the first three frames to open a 9-2 lead over the Blue and Green.
Â
The Islanders (19-32, 1-16) appeared to climb right back into the game in the fifth with four runs of their own.
Dalton Stark tripled home the first of the four runs. Stark would score on a groundout before Jozwiak singled home two of his three RBI on the day.
Â
The big inning cut the Cardinals' lead down to 9-6. UIW, however, responded with another six-run inning in the bottom half of the fifth to blow the game open.
Â
With reliever
Chris Glover on the mound for the Islanders, UIW used a double, walk and pair of singles to score a pair. Glover gave way to
Chad Romere who walked one Cardinal before a base-clearing triple made it 14-6. A wild pitch would complete the damage in the inning as UIW staked a 15-6 lead.
Â
A triple from
Jackson Owens in the tope of the sixth scored Stark, but UIW would answer back with a run of its own in the bottom half.
Â
The Cardinals ended the game early with a single run in the seventh for the 17-7 final.
