CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – After giving up six runs over the first two innings, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team could not rally from behind, as McNeese completed the weekend sweep with a 9-1 win at Chapman Field on Saturday.
McNeese (28-13, 14-1) was led by a three-hitter from Rachel Smith (11-5). The Cowgirls hurler held the Islanders (6-26, 1-11) to one hit through five innings and struck out a pair.
Lexi Shaw broke up the no-hitter in the third, beating out the throw on an infield single.
The visitors converted a trio of errors by the Islanders into three runs in the first inning, as the Blue and Green committed six defensive miscues. McNeese added three scores in both the second and sixth innings.
McNeese tallied nine hits on the afternoon with Tori Yanitor going 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Kandace Johnson (1-13) took the loss with five hits and six runs, five earned, in 1 2/3 innings, before
Liz Carter came on in relief to strike out four, while surrendering three runs.
Aspen Auger put the Islanders on the board in the sixth, as she plated
Savannah Sandoval from third on a fielder's choice.
ON DECK
The Islanders hit the road for a Southland Conference set at Sam Houston State next weekend.
