SAN ANTONIO – Nick Anderson launched a two-run home run and drove in three runs on the night while the pitching staff limited UTSA to just four hits as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi rolled to a 5-2 win Tuesday night.
The Islanders manufactured runs in the third and fourth innings off a double and sacrifice fly in each frame.
Jackson Owens doubled in the third and came across on
Sam Mahofski's fly to right. The following inning was nearly identical as
Dalton Stark roped his team-leading ninth double of the year. Stark came home on
Nick Anderson's sac fly to center.
Anderson's day was not done yet, as the center fielder crushed his two-run blast to left in the sixth. His third homer of the season, the shot capped a three-run frame which extended the lead to 5-1.
On the mound,
Chris Cooper (3-3) was stellar in his start. The right-hander went three innings of shutout baseball, allowing just a single hit. Cooper earned the victory as his outing was predetermined to be less than five innings.
Five relievers combined to hold down the Roadrunners for the remaining six innings.
David Worrell was especially impressive in his two innings of work out of the bullpen. The sophomore struck out four of the seven batters he faced, surrendering just a single walk.
UTSA (14-13) picked up runs in the fourth and the eighth, but never truly threatened to take the lead.
After the Roadrunners cut the lead to three,
Cullen Jozwiak came on in relief to finish off the final 1 2/3 innings. The everyday shortstop, Jozwiak earned his first save of the season by striking out one and not allowing a baserunner.
