Big Inning Fells Islanders

Lamar scores four in third to spark sweep

Story Links

BEAUMONT, Texas – For a third straight day, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi raced to an early lead as Jackson Owens homered in the top of the first, but it was not enough as Lamar scored four times in the third to spark a 6-4 victory Saturday afternoon.

Owens' solo shot was his team-leading fourth of the season and staked the Islanders to a 1-0 lead, but trouble arose once again in the form of walks in the third.

Lamar (22-15, 9-9) opened the game-changing frame with a double, which just barely caught the chalk down the left field line. An error followed in center field before two consecutive walks tied the game. The Cardinals would get two more singles in the inning, hanging a four-spot in the board.

Islander starter Devin Skapura (1-4) was forced to exit midway through the third with an injury. The senior was tagged for four runs, two earned, on four hits in taking the loss.

The Islanders (13-23, 5-10) would claw back into the game, twice cutting the deficit to two but were unable to pull level.

In the fifth inning, a Cardinal error and single would put the first two men aboard for the Islanders. A sac bunt moved both into scoring position and Luke Marbach cut the deficit to 4-2 with his sac fly to deep center field. The Blue and Green would leave another runner at third in the inning.

Lamar responded with two runs of its own in the bottom half, extending the advantage to 6-2.

The Blue and Green pulled back a pair of runs in the seventh, all started by a Lamar error. After the miscue, Cullen Jozwiak laced a double into the left field corner to put runners on second and third. Dawson Yates lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score one, followed by an RBI-groundout from Lukas Hermanson to make it 6-4.

That was all the Islanders would get, however, as Lamar closed the door for the series sweep.

Jace Campbell picked up the win for the Cardinals, going six innings while allowing four runs. Tanner Driskell pitched the final three innings to earn his second save.

Out of the bullpen for the Islanders, Chris Cooper worked two scoreless allowing a pair of hits. David Worrell worked the final four innings, allowing two runs on four hits.

The Islanders return to Chapman Field Tuesday night to host UTRGV in the South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union, before welcoming Stephen F. Austin over the weekend.
