Walk-Off Home Run Drops Islanders on the Road

VICTORIA, Texas – Down 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Jacob Atkinson hit a walk-off three-run home run for UH-Victoria to beat the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team 5-3.
 
The Islanders (9-17) took an early lead on a two-RBI triple from Dalton Stark. The junior plated Brett Burner and Nick Anderson, both reached base on free passes. 
 
The Jaguars (10-14) tied it up in the fifth. Starting pitcher Allen Westmoreland singled in Derek Maciejeski, before Andrew Gross brought home Blake Henneke on an infield single.
 
Dawson Yates extended his hitting streak to four straight games and 10 in the last 12 outings with a home run in the seventh. The solo shot was the Kelowna, B.C., native's first of the year and put the Islanders back out in front.
 
In the ninth, UH-Victoria set up Atkinson's home run with a single from Joshua Fonseca to shallow right and Wesley Kutac's walk. Atkinson lifted a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left for the win.
 
Islanders starting pitcher Dustin Lacaze worked through five complete innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Chad Romere tossed three hitless innings to set up David Worrell's save opportunity in the ninth.
 
The Jaguars used eight different pitchers with Andrew Gross picking up the win for his 1 2/3 innings of allowing one earned run on three hits.
 
Corpus Christi will travel to New Orleans for a three-game set this weekend. The Islanders and the Privateers open the series on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
