Northwestern State Tops Islanders in Friday Doubleheader

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team dropped both games in its Friday doubleheader against Northwestern State.

In the series opener, the Islanders (5-20, 0-5) nearly climbed out of a three-run hole, but the Lady Demons (13-19-1, 3-5) held on for a 3-2 win. The visitors then used a six-run fourth inning in the second game to send the Blue and Green to a 12-1 loss.

GAME 1
Islanders pitcher Liz Carter (4-11) came out dealing in the opener. The Austin native struck out eight and walked a pair, but the Lady Demons turned seven hits into three runs.

In her first game back from injury, Mackinzee Griebel went 2-for-3 for the Blue and Green.

Northwestern State did all its damage in the third inning. The Lady Demons opened the frame with three straight hits to load the bases. Following a strikeout by Carter, Kaylee Isenburg put the visitors ahead with a sacrifice fly to right field. With two on and two out, Jordan Rains singled up the middle to plate a pair.

From that point on, Carter held the Lady Demons to just a pair of hits, while punching out three.

The Islanders climbed back into the game in the fifth. Mariah Clay drew a one-out walk, one of two on the day. Lacey Boyd followed that with a single, before Griebel walked to load the bases. Aspen Auger drove a 1-2 pitch through the right side to pull the Blue and Green within one.

Katelyn Boles carried Northwestern State to the win by scattering five hits with six punchouts and four walks, while limiting the Blue and Green to one single over the final six outs.

GAME 2
Lady Demons starting pitcher Mikayla Brown controlled the second game, tossing a two-hitter.

Northwestern State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second with three runs. Back-to-back RBI base knocks by Micayla Sorosiak and Sidney Salmans led to a bases-loaded walk for the Lady Demons.

The Blue and Green scratched a run across in the third. Savannah Sandoval walked, before stealing second and third. Mackinzee Griebel singled the Magnolia native in to cut the deficit to three.

Six runs on four hits and one error by Northwestern State in fourth put the game out of reach for the Islanders. Kellye Kincannon's two-run home run generated the only earned runs in the inning.

Freshman Kandace Johnson (1-9) took the loss after giving up 12 runs, eight earned, on 13 hits with a trio of strikeouts.

SERIES FINALE
The Islanders and Lady Demons wrap up their three-game set on Saturday at noon.
