SAN ANTONIO – Mackinzee Griebel,
Kandace Johnson and
Liz Carter each recorded 2-hit performances on Wednesday night, as the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team defeated UTSA 3-2.
The Islanders (3-10) took the lead early with an RBI single from
Kandace Johnson in the third, bringing in
Savannah Sandoval, who had opened the frame with a single, before stealing second.
Liz Carter plated
Lacey Boyd with a bases-loaded RBI groundout in the fifth to give the Blue and Green a 2-0 lead.
The Roadrunners (6-9) struck back in the bottom half of the inning. A leadoff single by Taylor Oberg led to pair of RBI hits to tie the game at 2-2.
In the seventh, a failed back pick by UTSA catcher Randee Crawford sailed the ball into right field and allowed
Lacey Boyd to score from third. The run was the latest scored in a game this season for the Blue and Green.
Liz Carter (3-5) picked up the win in her eighth complete game of the season. The Austin native allowed a pair of earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Carter held the Roadrunners hitless through three innings.
Corpus Christi benefitted from three UTSA errors, including two in the seventh, while the Islanders played their fourth clean game of the season.
Nicole Merrill went 4 2/3 innings for the no decision, allowing one earned run on seven hits with three free passes. Lizzy Fox stepped into the circle in the fifth, taking the loss after allowing the decisive run in the seventh.
KEY INNINGS
TOP 3
>> Sandoval beat a throw to first to lead off the inning. The junior stole second and reached third on a sacrifice bunt from Boyd.
>> After being looked back to third on a Griebel groundout, Johnson laced one up the middle to bring in Sandoval for the RBI.
TOP 5
>> Boyd drew a one-out walk, before advancing to third during at bats for Griebel and Johnson.
>> Carter grounded to the shortstop, who tossed the ball to third as Boyd sprinted home.
BOTTOM 5
>> Taylor Oberg walked to leadoff the frame. Angelica Nino brought her home on an RBI single. Celeste Loughman doubled to left to score Nino.
TOP 7
>> Boyd singled to left on a 3-2 count and advanced on an error by the left fielder.
>> Griebel put runners on the corners with no outs with a single to third.
>> Boyd scurried home on the failed back-pick attempt.
BOTTOM 7
>> UTSA put the pressure on Carter with a runner on third with one out.
>> Loughman swung at the first pitch of her at-bat and lined it to
Aspen Auger at third, who doubled up Lindsey Stewart to end the game.
LEAVING FOR LOUISIANA
The Islanders play the final five games of their season opening 18-game road swing this weekend at the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational. Corpus Christi will face North Dakota State and host Louisiana twice and Alcorn State once.
