HUNTSVILLE, Texas – For a third straight day, Sam Houston State used a big middle inning to top Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as the Bearkats scored four times in the sixth to complete the sweep with a 6-3 win.
Â
The Islanders (6-14, 0-3) scored first as a two-out double from
Dawson Yates in the top of the first was followed by an RBI-single from
Nick Anderson. It was the second time this weekend the Islanders scored in the first inning, but the lead would not hold.
Â
Sam Houston State leveled in the third on a pair of singles. The game would remain deadlocked until the Bearkats broke things open in the sixth.
Â
A pair of doubles powered the four-run inning for the Bearkats as Sam Houston State finally chased Islander starter
Cole Carter (1-4) from the game. Carter lasted 5 2/3 innings allowing five runs, four earned on six hits. The right-hander struck out three in the loss.
Â
The Islanders pulled a run back in the top of the seventh as Anderson lifted a sacrifice fly to center for his second RBI of the day. Sam Houston State answered right back in the bottom half to push the lead back to four.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi attempted to stage a ninth-inning rally as both
Brett Burner and Yates produced one-out singles to put runners at the corners. Anderson drove Burner home with a sac fly, but the Islanders were unable to pull any closer.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi had its share of chances Sunday afternoon but went just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Yates led the Blue and Green at the plate with a 3-for-5 day and added a double and a run scored as well. Â
Dalton Stark also recorded multiple hits with a 2-for-4 afternoon.
Â
Anderson finished the day with all three of the Islanders RBI. The center fielder finished 1-for-3 with a pair of sacrifice flies.
Â
Hayden Wesneski (5-1) earned the win for Sam Houston State. The starter scattered eight hits over 6 1/3 innings allowing two runs, only one of which was earned.
