HOUSTON – Despite a 12-point lead at the half, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team could not withstand a 42-point second half by Houston Baptist on Saturday, as the Blue and Green fell 56-51 on the road.
Â
"I thought our transition defense in the second half did not allow us to do the things we needed to do," head coach
Royce Chadwick said. "We didn't match up and pick our man up well enough, and gave them too many one-on-one situations.
Â
"We could not hit a perimeter shot. It was an extremely difficult night shooting from the perimeter. We didn't get enough offensive-rebound put backs to put us over the hump. We need to get our outside shot going if we want to win in February."
Â
The Islanders (8-14, 4-7) forced the Huskies (5-15, 3-7) into 21 turnovers on the night, as the defense kept the hosts to 14 points in the opening 20 minutes.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi matched its defensive intensity over the opening two periods by shooting 46-percent from the field, but a 28-percent mark in the second half, compared to the 57-percent clip by HBU, allowed the Huskies cut into the Islanders' lead.
Â
Houston Baptist made it a game in the third quarter on the back of a 15-0 run. After
Brianna Jackson scored six straight to give the Blue and Green a three-point lead early in the fourth, the Huskies connected on a trio of 3-pointers, while the Islanders went 4-of-12 from the field.
The Islanders took the lead on three separate occasions in the fourth before the Huskies closed out the game on a 9-3 run.Â
Â
Dalesia Booth scored a team-high 18 points.
Ashanti Plummer guided the Islanders to a fast start with eight points in the first period, before finishing with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Â
Saturday marked the first time A&M-Corpus Christi failed to convert on a 3-pointer since Jan. 26, 2013 at Southeastern Louisiana.
Â
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
The Islanders hit the road on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip in Hammond, La., against the Lady Lions.
